Stromboli has been considered the “lighthouse of the Mediterranean” since ancient times. It is a source of inspiration for both visitors and residents.
It is a small island, 12 km in circumference, and an active volcano known all over the world, 2924 meters high (2000 of which is submerged), with a smattering of white houses.
Of the seven Eolian islands, Stromboli is the Northern one. It is visited each year by International tourists and it offers views of spectacular volcanic explosions. The volcano’s unique activity is classified as STROMBOLIANA, due to its regular explosions that do not threaten the surrounding areas.
Visitors can travel through specific paths to marvel at the sight of these characteristic explosions. The “Nature Path” is free to enter and it leads to 290 meters above sea level ( the maximum height allowed without a guide). Trekking enthusiasts, who wish to hire local authorized guides, can reach 400 meters above sea levels, being able to see the “Sciara del Fuoco”
Leaving Piscità, for those who wish to enjoy a leisurely stroll, one can reach the North Eastern side of the island by traveling through La Vecchia Mulattiera, that leads to Punta Labronzo, best known as the Observatory.
On the Western slope of the island, one can visit Ginostra, a small residential center. The path Punta Corvo can be accessed from here. Free to access, the path reaches 130 meters above sea level. Also from here the same rule applies, to access 400 meters one must be accompanied by an authorized guide in order to enjoy the volcanic explosions.
In order to safely travel the various paths that lead to the volcano, the right equipment is strongly recommended: Hiking boots, flashlight, hiking sticks, a change of shirt, and a wind-proof jacket, all easily available for rent on the island.
For those interested in furthering their knowledge of the VOLCANOS, there are two info points and Visitor Centers that offer a wealth of information on this majestic active volcano.
